Bemidji is a peaceful town, and one of our most asked questions is about the name Bemidji and where it came from. Bemidji was established in 1888. Its name, first applied to the lake and then to the Ojibwa chief, who in 1883 became the area's first permanent residents from an Ojibwa word meaning "a lake with crossing waters." It was so named because the Mississippi River passes through the lake.
We are conveniently located just five blocks from downtown where there are fantastic shops and delicious dining places. On your way to downtown, stop at the historic statue of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. Paul and Babe are the second most photographed tourist site in the United States. Time Magazine has recognized Paul and Babe in the top 50 American Roadside Attractions. Minnesota Monthly Magazine has recognized Paul and Babe as the Number 1 Road Trip Attraction.
We are few blocks from Bemidji State University, as well. Lake Bemidji Bed and Breakfast is on the Paul Bunyan Trail system. Easily access the Paul Bunyan, Heartland and Lake Bemidji Loop Trails. Enjoy the beauty of Itasca State Park and walk across the Headwaters of the Mississippi as it starts its winding journey 2,552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Itasca State Park has been recognized by Minnesota Monthly Magazine as 2nd best state park. Three Island Park is another beauty of the area. Bring your bicycle, roller blades, or take a leisurely walk or go for a run along the paved trails. Paul Bunyan State Trail, that runs along our inn, was recognized by Minnesota Monthly Magazine as the second best state trail. Don't have a bike? Spend time exploring the shores of Lake Bemidji and watch the eagles soar overhead. Diamond Point Park is a short 10 minute walk and a great place to swim. The OPC (Outdoor Program Center) rents outdoor equipment such as canoes, kayaks, paddle boards and cross country skis, to the public. Pack a picnic lunch for your stop at Lake Bemidji State Park located on the north shore of the lake. If you prefer kayaking or canoeing, take the steps down to the lake.
Audubon Minnesota has designated Bemidji as the state's third Bird City.
Bemidji and the surrounding area offer incredible golfing options. In the winter, plan on some cross-country skiing or toss on your snow shoes and head out to the trails. If you want to downhill ski, snowboard or go snow tubing, head 15 minutes north of Bemidji to Buena Vista Ski Area. Recognized as the Snowmobile Capital of the North by Minnesota Monthly, here are a few of the reasons why you should ride the Legendary trails of Bemidji. There are hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails accessible near Lake Bemidji.
